HAL Share’s on high-trail, GE Aerospace delivers first of 99 F404-IN20 engines

Shares of Hindustan Aeronautics are trading higher by 3.72% amid GE Aerospace has commenced deliveries of the F404-IN20 engines to the company for the Tejas Mk1A fighter aircraft. The company announced that it has delivered the first of 99 F404-IN20 engines ordered by HAL for the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk1A.

"This is an important milestone in our 40-year partnership with HAL and in our ongoing efforts to support India's defense sector by advancing next-generation fighter capabilities while strengthening domestic defense manufacturing," GE Aerospace stated.

Marking a significant turning point for both India and GE Aerospace, the F404-IN20 engine was chosen in 2004 to power the single-engine Tejas. Powering thousands of combat planes worldwide, the F404 engine family is among the most successful in military aviation history.

Specifically made for India's Tejas, the F404-IN20 has the most thrust in the F404 series as well as a high-flow fan, improved single-crystal turbine blades, and unique parts.

By 2016, GE Aerospace is mandated for providing, 65 F404-IN20 engines for the Tejas LCA to HAL. The F404-IN20 production line was closed down with no more orders at the time.

Though, HAL ordered 99 more engines for the Tejas Mk1A LCA in 2021. This led GE Aerospace to take on the difficult job of restarting its worldwide supply chain and the F404-IN20 production line—dormant for five years.
