PM Modi and Sri Lankan President inaugurate Colombo rail line with RITES-supplied M11 locomotive and coaches
State-owned Railway PSU, RITES Ltd has proudly announced that Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi and along with the President of Sri Lanka H.E. Anura Kumara Disanayaka has inaugurated a rail line in Colombo, with the train powered by RITES-supplied M11 locomotive & passenger coaches. This step has been considered crucial in strengthening connectivity & collaboration between two nations.

Following the leaders' inauguration of the 128-kilometer Maho-Omanthai railway line, which had been renovated with Indian assistance totalling USD 91.27 million, work on an advanced signalling system from Maho to Anuradhapura, which is being constructed with Indian grant assistance totalling USD 14.89, began.
This is an important step towards enhancing north-south rail connectivity in Sri Lanka, taken with the implementation of these historic railway modernisation projects under the India-Sri Lanka development partnership. They would make it easier for freight and passenger traffic to move across the nation quickly and effectively.

RITES, a CPSE under the Indian Ministry of Railways, has supplied 160 stainless steel passenger coaches to Sri Lanka Railways, with the first batch of 10 coaches delivered in Colombo in March 2021, and the project is financed through an Indian Line of Credit.
