JICA Sanctions Rs 4649 Crore Loan for Delhi Metro Phase 4 Expansion to Improve Urban Mobility

The Japan International Cooperation Agency JICA has approved an Official Development Assistance ODA loan of Rs 4649 crores to accelerate the expansion of Delhi Metro Phase 4. This strategic investment will add 47 km of new metro corridors featuring 39 stations and 178 metro cars significantly enhancing public transportation and reducing pollution across Delhi NCR.

Significant Financial Boost for Metro Expansion

JICA has allocated 79726 million Japanese Yen Rs 4649 crores for the Delhi Mass Rapid Transport System Project Phase 4 Additional Corridors I as part of a larger investment of 298358 million Yen. This financial support is set to transform the citys connectivity making public transit more efficient and sustainable.

Tackling Urban Mobility Challenges

The Phase 4 expansion involves extending Line 1 Red Line and Line 5 Green Line while introducing a new Line 11 covering 47 km of new metro tracks. Key project highlights include

  • 39 new metro stations 9 underground 1 at-grade and 29 elevated stations

  • A new metro depot for improved fleet management and operations

  • Advanced signalling electrical and communication systems to enhance passenger experience

  • Automated fare collection technology for seamless and efficient ticketing

Infrastructure and Rolling Stock Enhancement

To accommodate increased passenger demand 178 new metro coaches will be procured. The project also includes consulting services for design review construction supervision and technology transfer ensuring smooth execution and strengthening local expertise in metro infrastructure.

Projected Impact and Sustainability Goals

By 2031 the upgraded metro system is expected to serve approximately 400000 daily commuters benefiting over 17 million residents in Delhi NCR. Additionally the initiative aims to cut CO2 emissions by 26550 tons annually aligning with Delhi Master Plan 2021 and Japans Development Cooperation Policy for India to promote sustainable urban development.
