IRCTC navigates new rules: Passengers can now cancel counter tickets via official website
This change simplifies the procedure for individuals used to online ticketing using the IRCTC website or app by removing the need for passengers to return to the counters for cancellations.

New Delhi: In a major step taken by Indian Railway, IRCTC has rolled out new norms where passengers who bought tickets at counters can easily cancel them via the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) official website. This change simplifies the procedure for individuals used to online ticketing using the IRCTC website or app by removing the need for passengers to return to the counters for cancellations.
An important thing that should be noted is that cancellation charges are applicable based on timing.

Following are the steps to cancel counter tickets online through the IRCTC website:
Step 1: Visit the IRCTC website and navigate to the ‘Trains’ section. Then, select "Cancel Ticket" and choose the Counter Ticket option.
Step 2: Enter necessary details like the PNR number, train number, and the provided Captcha. Confirm your understanding of the cancellation process by ticking the relevant box and then click submit.
Step 3: After submission, an OTP (One-Time Password) will be sent to the mobile number provided during the booking.
Step 4: Confirm the cancellation request by entering the OTP you have received on the registered mobile number.
Step 5: Once validated, the screen will display PNR details. Carefully review the information and proceed by clicking 'Cancel Ticket' for a complete cancellation. The total refund amount will be clearly indicated.
Step 6: After cancellation, you will receive an SMS that will have the PNR number and refund details on your registered mobile number.

Please make sure to provide a valid mobile number during booking to qualify for cancellation.
Cancellation and fare refund are permitted for PRS counter tickets under regular circumstances, except for train delays or cancellations.
Online cancellation is acceptable up to 4 hours before the scheduled departure for fully confirmed tickets.
Online cancellation is permitted up to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure for RAC/Waitlist tickets.
