ONGC Tripura plans to increase Gas Production to Meet Rising Demand
In order to meet the growing demand, ONGC Tripura Asset has set a target to increase its natural gas output to 4 MMSCMD within the next year, a senior official said on Friday.
The company currently produces 3.5 MMSCMD of gas and supplies three significant gas-based power plants, including OTPC in the Gomati area of Tripura. "At the moment, we generate 3.5 MMSCMD yearly to assist the state's power plants. At a news conference, ONGC Chief General Manager Roopesh Kumar Sharan stated, "Our goal is to increase production to 4 MMSCMD within a year."
He emphasized that in addition to operating 95 gas-producing wells, ONGC Tripura Asset explores 17–18 wells a year to find additional reserves. In the northeastern region, exploration success rates hover around 50 percent, aligning with the national average.

At present, seven drilling rigs are deployed to locate new gas sources. Addressing concerns over the reduced gas supply to the OTPC-run Palatana power plant, Sharan confirmed that the supply had been increased. The 726 MW plant had reduced its power generation to 400 MW due to certain issues, with approximately 100 MW being exported to Bangladesh.
Regarding the Indra Dhanush Gas Grid (IGGL), Sharan stated that Tripura is expected to be connected by September next year. “Once the state is linked to IGGL, there will be no difficulties in meeting gas requirements for power generation or industrial use,” he assured.
