NTPC Tender: PSU Firm seeks to build small nuclear reactors to replace old thermal plants
The top power producer in India, a state-run enterprise, has requested consultants to conduct feasibility studies for small modular reactors (SMRs), which can be scaled up to meet demand and have simpler designs than large nuclear plants.

According to a tender document, state-run NTPC is considering the possibility of replacing its older thermal power plants with small modular reactors. This is the first proposal of its kind since the nation opened its highly guarded nuclear sector.

As per the issued tender on Monday, NTPC, which primarily operates coal-fired plants, is looking to determine which ones can be retired within the next five years, ideally being replaced by SMRs.
Even though businesses like Tata Power have shown interest in constructing SMRs, NTPC is the first to put out a tender. Additionally, NTPC intends to construct massive nuclear reactors with a combined capacity of roughly 15 GW. Work on two 2.6 GW plants has begun.
