Parbati-II hydroelectric project: NHPC concludes trial run of Unit 2 of this project

On Monday, March 24, National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (NHPC) reported the successful conclusion of the trial run for Unit 2 (200 MW) of the Parbati-II Hydroelectric Project in Himachal Pradesh.

The firm expects to finish trial runs for the other three units by March 31, 2025. Since its start in 2003, the Parbati-II project, with a total capacity of 800 MW (four units of 200 MW each), has experienced notable hold-ups. Originally scheduled for commissioning in 2010, the project ran into problems including tunnelling, water and silt seepage, flash floods, and negative geological conditions.

Notwithstanding these challenges, the finishing of Unit 2's trial run signals a turning point towards the project's full operational state.

Once all units are commissioned, the Parbati-II project is projected to produce over 3,074 million units (MU) of power yearly, hence greatly increasing India's renewable energy capacity. Moreover, the project's running is expected to reduce flood hazards along the Parbati River, therefore helping areas from Barshaini in the Manikaran Valley to Bhuntar.
