CPCL finally gets interim stay on impugned order from TNPCB
The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has asked the state-run firm CPCL to pay environmental compensation of Rs 6.24 crore on 20th March, 2024.

State-owned Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd has disclosed through an exchange filing that it has obtained an Interim Stay on the Impugned order of TNPCB from the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has asked the state run firm to pay environmental compensation of Rs 6.24 crore on 20th March, 2024.
Therefore, the company stated that NGT has granted an Interim Stay on the Impugned Order dated 24.02.2025 of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) demanding Rs.6.24 Crore from CPCL on condition that CPCL shall deposit 50% of the environmental compensation of Rs.6.24 Cr. as levied by the TNPCB i.e., Rs.3.12 crore in favour of the Tamil Nadu State Pollution Control Board within a period of 06 weeks failing which, the stay granted will be automatically vacated without further reference to NGT.

Further, the company has mentioned that there is no impact on the operation and other activities of the company. However, the financial implication would be limited to compensation of Rs. 6.24 Crore, subject to outcome of appeal pending before NGT.
The Company is examining the Order from TNPCB in this regard, will be examined legally and appropriate action will be taken.
