According to an official, the state-run Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) has unveiled a Rs 1,500 crore project to update the power supply in its command area. This will guarantee high-quality power 24/7 and lower aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses.

The distribution network of DVC primarily caters to industrial clients, with minimal supply to retail consumers. The project aims to transition from traditional power distribution to a modern, technology-driven system.

This new approach will create a strong primary and secondary distribution network throughout DVC's command area, which covers 24,235 square kilometers in West Bengal and Jharkhand.

The project costs around Rs 1,500 crore and will be finished in 18 months. The system integrates advanced features such as a distribution management system, an outage management system, customer relation management, a metering data management system, GIS mapping for real-time communication, ring main units (RMU), and fibre optic-based metering communication systems, an official added.

According to sources, the new distribution system integrates state-of-the-art technologies such as modular battery chargers, substation automation systems (SAS), and unmanned container-based substations (E-houses) outfitted with 33 KV panels based on GIS.

During the first phase, DVC will install four GIS-based prefab substations, eight traditional indoor 33/11 KV substations, and twelve E-houses. The first E-house was commissioned on January 3, 2025, in Dhanbad, with additional E-houses in BIADA, Deoli, Giridih, Hazaribagh, and Sindri slated for commissioning by March 2025, Sarkar added.

The entire distribution network, including consumer feeders, will be managed through two advanced control centers located in Kalyaneshwari, West Bengal, and Koderama, Jharkhand, DVC said.

The entire distribution network, including consumer feeders, will be managed through two advanced control centres located in Kalyaneshwari, West Bengal, and Koderama, Jharkhand, DVC said.

These centers will provide hot redundancy and will feature a 24/7 customer support center. The new system will allow for the automatic connection and disconnection of consumer services based on billing and collection.

This enables customers to manage their services seamlessly through a mobile app, eliminating the need for physical interactions, according to an official. The company aims to enhance operational efficiency, reduce losses, and provide consumers with a seamless and transparent experience, Sarkar stated.
