Power Minister urges states to take timely action on vacant positions in State Electricity Regulatory Commissions

NEW DELHI- Section 82 of the Electricity Act, 2003 empowers State Government to appoint Chairpersons and Members of State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC). The details of the State-wise vacancy position in SERCs as provided by Forum of Regulators (FoR) is at Annexure.

The Central Government has advised the State Governments from time to time to take all necessary steps for filling up the vacant posts of Chairpersons/Members in concerned SERC within stipulated time as per provisions of the Electricity Act, 2003.

State Electricity Regulatory Commissions:

State Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERCs) are independent regulatory bodies that were established under the Electricity Regulatory Commissions Act, 1998 in India. These commissions are responsible for regulating the power sector in their respective states and ensuring that electricity tariffs are reasonable, transparent, and non-discriminatory.

The key functions of SERCs include setting tariff rates for the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity, issuing licenses to power companies, resolving disputes between power companies and consumers, and promoting competition in the power sector. SERCs also play a crucial role in promoting the use of renewable energy sources and ensuring the reliability and quality of power supply.

Overall, the main objective of SERCs is to create a conducive regulatory environment for the power sector that promotes investment, innovation, and efficiency, while protecting the interests of consumers and ensuring the sustainability of the power sector.
