With this agreement, Odisha has become the 34th state to adopt the Ayushman Bharat scheme, leaving only West Bengal and Delhi yet to join. The signing ceremony took place at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, with key officials from both the central and state governments in attendance, including the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the CEO of NHA, L.S. Changsan, and Odisha’s Health Commissioner, Aswathy S.

The previous state government had resisted implementing the Ayushman Bharat scheme, emphasizing its own Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana as a superior alternative. However, under the leadership of Mohan Charan Majhi, the new government renamed the state’s health initiative as the Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana and worked toward integrating it with the central program.

Majhi highlighted that cashless treatment under the scheme will be available in over 29,000 hospitals nationwide, addressing the healthcare needs of approximately 3.5 crore people in Odisha.
