NTPC Talcher Kaniha Achieves 100% Ash Utilization

New Delhi: NTPC Talcher Kaniha, the Super Thermal Power Station with a capacity of 3010 MW, has achieved a significant environmental milestone by successfully achieving 100% ash utilization on March 20, 2025. This remarkable accomplishment highlights the station's unwavering commitment to sustainability and aligns with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change's (MoEFCC) guidelines towards Ash Utilisation.

Dwelling upon this significant achievement, Shri AK Sehgal, Executive Director, NTPC Talcher Kaniha, said that NTPC Talcher Kaniha has been playing a crucial role in supporting national infrastructure projects by supplying fly ash for the construction of roads, soil conservation, manufacturing ash products and other vital projects. This effort not only minimizes the environmental impact but also optimizes the potential of use of ash for diverse applications, supporting country's growth.

The station has provided substantial quantities of ash to projects led by National Highway Authority (NHAI) and the Odisha Government. The station has played a key role in supplying ash to critical road projects in Odisha, including Cuttack-Angul (NH55), Duburi-Chandikol-Balasor (NH53), Chandikol-Paradip (NH53), and Behrampur Bypass (NH 59), Khordha Bypass (NH 57), etc.

The station's impressive performance is highlighted by a total ash utilization of 67 LMT during the current financial year, registering a 43.2% increase over the previous financial year. In terms of percentage utilization, the station has achieved ash utilization rate of 100% for FY 2024-25, surpassing the previous year's rate of 68%. The station’s 100% ash utilization also includes non-dyke ash utilization of 45%. This reinforces NTPC's goal of storing minimum ash in ash ponds.

This success has been made possible through close collaboration between NTPC Talcher Kaniha, NHAI, the Odisha Government, OSPCB, and MCL. These collective efforts have been instrumental in ensuring the sustainable management and effective utilization of ash, helping to advance both environmental sustainability and national development.

Looking ahead, Shri AK Sehgal, Executive Director, NTPC Talcher Kaniha, emphasizes the enormous scope that lie in store for the sale of fine fly ash and other ash-based products for building and blending of ash with cement industries. He also mentions that TSTPS intends to export the finest quality of ash to neighbouring countries, which will continue to improve the efficiency of ash management, promote a cleaner environment, and contribute to the country's ongoing infrastructure development.
