A significant development in eco-friendly transport has taken place in Odisha with the signing of a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) among NTPC Limited, GRIDCO Limited, and Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) on Monday.

This MoU, effective for the next five years, outlines the roles and responsibilities of the three parties involved. Its primary goal is to advance green energy technologies in Odisha, specifically focusing on a green hydrogen mobility scheme. According to the MoU, NTPC will establish a green hydrogen fueling station in Bhubaneswar and hydrogen buses for short and long-haul operations.

NTPC will focus on hydrogen production, GRIDCO will ensure renewable energy supply, and CRUT will manage the operations of the hydrogen-powered buses. This collaborative effort aims to implement innovative green energy technologies in the state with a primary focus on revolutionizing the public transport system.

The scheme guidelines for the implementation of pilot projects for the use of green hydrogen in the transport sector have been issued by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

The pilot project, with an investment of Rs 19.5 crore by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), will facilitate the transition from fossil fuel-based buses to eco-friendly hydrogen-powered buses. CRUT, under the Housing & Urban Development Department (H&UDD) in association with GRIDCO (Energy Department) is making a shift to a zero-emission policy.

This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions, enhance operational efficiency, and improve the quality of bus services in the state. This initiative aligns with Odisha Renewable Energy Policy 2022 and NTPC’s diversification strategy into renewable energy, green hydrogen, and energy storage technologies, said a release from CRUT.
