State-run NTPC signed a Power Purchase Agreement with the Indian Army on Monday for the sale of 200 kW RE-RTC power from a solar-hydrogen-based Microgrid at Chushul (Ladakh) for 25 years.

The agreement was signed by DMR Panda, CGM, NTPC-Hydrogen and Aditya Harshey, Brigadier and Chief Engineer (Indian Army), Leh. The solar-hydrogen-based microgrid will offer a solution to replace the Army’s existing diesel gensets, in turn avoiding fossil fuel logistics arrangement and saving Carbon dioxide emissions of 1500 tons per year.

The hydrogen-based off-grid microgrid project is located at an altitude of 4,400 m, and temperatures dip to -30 degrees C in winter, making it one of the world's most unique grids. Once operational, it would begin a new era of decarbonization and modernization of the defence sector in the border locations of the Himalayas.
