Achieving a significant breakthrough as part of its commitment towards sustainability, NTPC has synthesized Methanol from CO2 in its one-of-a-kind 10 TPD CO2 to Methanol Plant at Vindhyachal. The milestone was attained on 6th November 2024, the eve of NTPC's 50th Raising Day.

This CCUS technology, a first of its kind in the world, has been conceived, designed, engineered, and awarded by NETRA, the R&D wing of NTPC, and is being executed by the Green Chemical Department of NTPC Vindhyachal in coordination with NETRA and Team Vindhyachal. It includes 20 TPD CO2 Capture Plant, 2 TPD PEM-based H2 Generation Project, and 10 TPD Methanol Synthesis Plant.

The first synthesis of Methanol was witnessed by Shri E Satya Phani Kumar, ED (Vindhyachal) in the presence of Shri Sameer Sharma, CGM (O&M), Dr B C Chaturvedi, CGM (Medical), Shri Sujay Karmakar, GM (Green Chemicals & BE), Shri Trilok Singh GM(RLI), Shri Rajasekhar Pala, GM (Operation), Shri AJ Rajkumar, GM (maintenance & ADM) and other senior officials of NTPC Vindhyachal. Dignitaries from NETRA including Shri Shaswattam, ED (NETRA), and Shri Subrata Sarkar, GM (NETRA) also witnessed this event online.

Additionally, NTPC’s legacy of firsts reached a historic milestone with the commissioning of India’s first ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in Khargone, Madhya Pradesh, in 2019. This cutting-edge plant operates with advanced technology that reduces coal consumption, leading to lower CO2 emissions. It marks a significant step in NTPC’s commitment to powering India’s future with efficient and sustainable energy.
