MoC-CIL & CMPDI Delegations Visit Underground Coal Gasification Projects in Uzbekistan and Australia

In April 2024, a delegation from the Ministry of Coal, Coal India Limited & CMPDI visited Angren (Uzbekistan) to assess the technical, operational and commercial aspects of Yerostigaz’s UCG production and explore collaboration avenues for fulfilling the purpose of commercial UCG operation in India.

Moreover, another delegation from MoC, CIL & CMPDI visited NeuRizer (earlier known as Leigh Creek Energy), Australia in May, 2024 to know how the UCG technology of NeuRizer to produce fertilizer and exploring possibilities of implementation in Indian Geo-mining conditions.

Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) is a process in which coal is converted into gas ‘in-situ’ through a physico-chemical process and the resultant syn-gas can be used as a fuel or chemical feedstock in the manufacture of Methanol/Fertilizer.

The produced syn-gas is a mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, carbon dioxide and higher hydrocarbons. 

UCG offers a potential economic means of extracting energy from deep seated coal/lignite deposits which are not amenable to conventional physical extraction economically.
