MCL's First MDO Project Becomes Operational

New Delhi: The Siarmal opencast coal mines of Coal India's subsidiary Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) has become operational in MDO (Mine Developer and Operator) mode. The project has an annual production capacity of 50 million tonnes per annum.

The MDO mode is a new contract mining model introduced by Coal India in 2021. Under this model, a private company is appointed as the Mine Developer and Operator (MDO) to develop and operate a coal mine. The MDO is responsible for all aspects of the mine's operations, including mine planning, design, construction, production, and rehabilitation.
