India's coal import rises 13% to 26 MT in April

New Delhi: India's coal import rose 13.2% to 26.10 million tonnes (MT) in April 2024. The country had imported 23.05 MT of coal in the year-ago period, according to data compiled by B2B e-commerce company Mjunction Services Ltd.

"India’s coal and coke imports in April 2024 through the major and non-major ports increased by 13.2% over April 2023," the data showed.

Imports of non-coking coal in April totaled 17.40 MT, up from 15.15 MT last year, while coking coal imports increased to 4.97 MT from 4.77 MT.

In April, coal imports increased by 8.93% compared to March when imports were at 23.96 million tonnes (MT). India's coal import rose 7.7% to 268.24 MT in the financial year 2023-24. Lower seaborne prices and the anticipated rise in power demand during the summer drove this increase.
