NEW DELHI- Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world, is all set to boost its flight handling capacity with the addition of a fourth operational runway and a new terminal expansion. This move comes as part of the airport's efforts to meet the growing demand for air travel and provide world-class facilities to passengers.

The IGI Airport, operated by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), has been witnessing a steady increase in passenger traffic over the years, making it one of the fastest-growing airports in the Asia-Pacific region. In order to cater this increasing demand, DIAL has taken a strategic decision to enhance the airport's infrastructure and expand its capacity.

According to a recent statement by Aviation Secretary Rajiv Bansal, the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi is gearing up to unveil its new terminal and fourth runway in September 2023.

The anticipated development comes as the Indian aviation sector continues to experience rapid growth, and reflects the airport's commitment to enhancing its infrastructure and connectivity with a strong emphasis on innovation. Mr. Bansal made this announcement during the EU-India Aviation Summit, highlighting the airport's dedication to providing improved facilities and services to meet the evolving needs of travelers and the aviation industry.

As Delhi's IGI Airport gears up for its ambitious expansion plan, it is expected to further strengthen its position as a key gateway to India and a preferred transit hub for international travelers. With improved capacity and facilities, the airport is poised to provide a seamless travel experience for millions of passengers and contribute to the growth of India's aviation industry.

The upcoming fourth runway at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi is expected to significantly reduce flight takeoff and landing times, providing improved efficiency and operational benefits. Originally slated for completion in mid-2022, the fourth runway is part of the government's broader plan to expand the Delhi airport and enhance its capacity.

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), a joint venture majority-owned by the GMR Group, had earlier announced an investment of Rs 9,800 crore towards upgrading the existing Terminal 1, constructing the fourth runway, and undertaking other development works to increase the airport's passenger capacity from 66 million to 100 million per year. The completion of the fourth runway is a crucial step towards achieving this goal and is expected to contribute towards smoother flight operations, reduced congestion, and enhanced overall performance of the airport.

As the Indian aviation sector continues to experience rapid growth, the timely completion of the fourth runway at IGI Airport is poised to play a vital role in catering to the increasing demand for air travel and further establishing Delhi as a prominent aviation hub in the region.
