HPCL signs MoU with Sea6 Energy to develop biofuel production from seaweed biomass
State-owned oil major HPCL and Sea6 Energy Private Limited have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for R&D collaboration to take up joint development and commercialization of technologies for valorizing seaweed biomass, as announced in a company statement on Wednesday.
Through this MoU, HPCL and Sea6 Energy will work together to develop and scale up technologies that transform seaweed biomass into fuels and chemicals. In parallel, Sea6 Energy will focus on improving the cost-effectiveness of seaweed farming and harvesting.

They can also be cultivated in areas unsuitable for conventional agriculture, such as coastlines. Seaweeds grow rapidly, with some species doubling their biomass within a few days.
Additionally, they present a significant opportunity for carbon capture, which can contribute to India’s net-zero goals by 2070.
HPCL has established the advanced HP Green R&D Centre in Bengaluru, where it conducts research in petroleum refining, catalyst development, biofuels, alternative energy, nanotechnology, and more. The company has also developed several patented technologies and products across various sectors.
