Bengaluru: DMRC's Managing Director, Dr. Vikas Kumar, has been conferred with the prestigious IGBC Senior Fellowship by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) in its 22nd Congress, being held at Bengaluru. This is in recognition to his contribution to promote the cause of green infrastructure not only in DMRC but also in various Indian Metros, under operation.

The title was bestowed on Dr. Kumar yesterday during the Green Building Congress. As DMRC's Managing Director, Dr. Kumar has actively supported the green building movement in India. Earlier there was no Green Building rating system exclusively for  Metro systems. Recognizing this gap, in 2014, DMRC and IGBC collaborated to create the World’s First Green Certification norm specifically for Mass Rapid Transit Systems (MRTS). Not only DMRC, but other Metros within India (like Kochi, Noida etc.) have also adopted this MRTS Green Rating.

The efforts to initiate a green culture across Metro systems in India has already started with collaborative efforts between different Metros and the IGBC. DMRC’s Metro stations constructed during Phase 3 have been certified Platinum as per the IGBC MRTS Rating System. In addition to this, its Depots, Receiving Sub Stations (RSS) as well as its colonies and the Corporate Headquarters, Metro Bhawan have also been certified as Green buildings by IGBC.

Earlier this year, Metro Bhawan was also certified as 'Carbon Neutral'. Metro Niketan, a residential colony in Noida has also received the same certification. Similar efforts will continue in the upcoming Phase 4 which is under construction. This congress organised by IGBC and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is Asia’s largest conference on green built environment.
