New Delhi: The largest and the busiest metro rail system in India, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation operates over 2,700 trips daily with 286 stations today celebrating its 28th Foundation Day. 

With 391 Total Network Lengths (km) including NOIDA-Greater NOIDA Aqua Line and Rapid Metro Gurugram, DMRC has a wide expansion having different phases. As the network has expanded, high ridership in new trains has led to an increase in the more routes and connecting maximum metro stations in Delhi.

DMRC's Ridership since FY 2016–17

DMRC, the equally owned by the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Government of India had a continuous increase in ridership since its inception up to FY 2016–17. When Metro services were introduced in 2002, the average ridership was 80,000 passengers per day. In FY 2016–17, average daily ridership rose to 27.61 lakh (2.76 million). Ridership declined in 2017 and marginally increased in 2018, following fare increases. In 2019, ridership averaged 47 lakh (4.7 million) per day between May and June 2019.

The highest number of passengers in a single day was reached on 30 July 2019, with 51.6 lakh (5.16 million) trips on the network. The ridership reached its peak in FY 2019–20 with average daily ridership of 27.79 lakhs (2.78 million).

On 25 December 2014, it was reported that the monthly ridership of the Airport Express had almost doubled in the past year to almost 6,00,000 passengers per month compared to just above 3,00,000 at the beginning of the calendar year.

Delhi Metro was shut because of the coronavirus pandemic on 25 March 2020 but restarted operations on 12 September 2020, according to the previous data.

On the occasion of Foundation day, DMRC thanked their commuters for considering the Delhi Metro as their preferred mode of public transport.

Vikas Kumar, Managing Director, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation delivered a special message said, the passengers as well as the employees of DMRC for making Delhi Metro the 'Mass Transportation Backbone' of the National Capital Region.
