Cochin Shipyard Ltd has announced the start of construction for a modern Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (CSOV). This vessel is one of two being built for Pelagic Wind Services Ltd, a Cyprus-based company. The keel-laying ceremony for the ship, named Pelagic Walu, took place on December 12.

Attendees at the ceremony included Andre Groenweld, CEO of Pelagic Wind Services Ltd; Sreejith K N, Director of Operations; and Harikrishnan S, Executive Director of Shipbuilding. Senior officials from Cochin Shipyard Ltd, representatives from the Classification Society DNV, and other stakeholders were also present.

The hybrid-electric vessel includes a substantial 2800 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This feature aims to boost operational efficiency while reducing emissions. CSL mentioned that the vessel is also designed for future methanol fuel operations, highlighting its role in promoting renewable energy.

The vessel measures 93 meters in length and 19.5 meters in breadth. It is based on the Kongsberg UT 5520 MH design, which prioritizes safety, operability, seakeeping performance, and reduced fuel consumption. This design allows the vessel to accommodate up to 120 personnel, including wind farm technicians. It also meets DNV comfort class notations, ensuring a comfortable environment for those on board.
