The government of Andhra Pradesh plans to establish a major oil refinery and petrochemical complex in Ramayapatnam, Nellore district, with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) spearheading the Rs 60,000 crore investment. The project fulfills a key promise made during the state’s bifurcation in 2014, solidifying Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s position as a driving force behind the state’s development initiatives.

BPCL has selected a 1,000-acre site in Ramayapatnam after evaluating three proposed locations: Srikakulam, Machilipatnam, and Ramayapatnam. Following detailed feasibility studies conducted after discussions with BPCL’s leadership in July, Ramayapatnam was deemed the most suitable due to its strategic advantages, including access to a dedicated jetty at the Ramayapatnam port.

The project, aligned with the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, of 2014, has been a long-standing demand since the bifurcation of the state. Section 93 of the Act mandated the establishment of a greenfield oil refinery and petrochemical hub in Andhra Pradesh within a decade. The move represents a significant step toward meeting these promises.

This initiative is expected to create significant employment opportunities and drive economic growth in Andhra Pradesh.

By establishing the refinery and petrochemical hub, BPCL aims to strengthen India’s downstream capabilities and meet growing energy demands while contributing to the state’s industrial advancement.
