SHKT Technology under Hydro Category to achieve net zero emission target
This technology is a solution that may support the power sector in meeting the growing demand for base-load, round-the-clock renewable energy, especially in areas with poor grid accessibility.
Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has recognized Surface Hydrokinetic Turbine (SHKT) technology under the Hydro Category to drive innovations and explore alternate technologies to achieve net zero emission targets and ensure sustainable development of the power sector for the nation.
SHKT uses the kinetic energy of flowing water with practically zero potential head for the generation of electrical energy unlike conventional units, which utilize the potential energy of water through the construction of suitable civil structures such as dams, diversion weirs, and barrages for the creation of necessary 'Head'.

Surface Hydrokinetic turbines are easy to install and cost-effective, with a generation cost of Rs 2-3 per unit. This technology provides a win-win situation both for renewable energy buyers and generators.
The adoption of SHKT technology shall mark a significant milestone in leveraging India’s extensive water infrastructure, including canals, hydropower tailrace channels, etc. for sustainable energy generation. This technology has huge potential on the GW scale with a lot of opportunities to harness renewable energy, leading to the overall growth of the power sector.
