Govt declares 57000 km state roads as new NH
The decision is learnt to be taken to enhance Road safety, reduce congestion, improve connectivity and conditions, the Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, P Radhakrishnan, told Lok Sabha on Thursday in a written reply.
In 2015, the country registered about 5, 01,423 numbers of road accident with about 1, 46,133 numbers of persons being killed. The NHs accounted for about 29.1 per cent share of total road accidents with 35.0 per cent of total persons killed. Although the existing NHs comprise of about 1.9 per cent of total road network, they carry about 40 per cent of total road traffic, the Minister said.
