He joined Instrumentation Section of Kakrapar Atomic Power Station in the year 1986 and was involved in erection & commissioning of Flux Monitoring System, Reactor Regulation & Protection Systems and Boiler Level & Pressure Control Systems.

In the year 2000, he took over as Senior Maintenance Engineer (Instrumentation). In his tenure as SME(I), KAPS, availing the opportunity of long outage period during the EMCCR of KAPS Unit-1 in the Year-2008-09, he took up and successfully completed the challenging tasks of replacement of Logic Relay Panels, Installation and commissioning of Safety Related PDCS and up-gradation of several critical systems of KAPS Unit-1. For his significant contribution in stabilizing and improving the performance of KAPS Control & Instrumentation Systems, he was conferred with NPCIL Special Contribution Award for the year 2011. He assumed various responsibilities at KAPS and in the year 2018 he was designated as Station Director, KAPS-1&2.

Under his leadership with meticulous planning, constant follow-up and commendable efforts put by the KAPS team, the simultaneous EMCCR & EMFR of both the KAPS Units was completed successfully. Both Units of KAPS could be synchronized back to grid three and half months ahead of the originally planned schedule on 22nd September 2018 and 24th May 2019 respectively.

On 5th January 2021, Shri V. K. Sharma took over as Site Director, Tarapur Maharashtra Site and from 01st June 2022, he assumed office as Director (Operations). He is recognized as a Distinguished Scientist of the Department of Atomic Energy.
