Vizhinjam Port Expansion: APSEZ Commits ₹16,000 Crore for Kerala Transshipment Hub
Tiruvananthapuram, Kerala – Vizhinjam International Seaport, Kerala’s landmark deep-water transshipment hub, has entered a major new growth phase following a ₹16,000 crore expansion commitment by the Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ). This marks a significant milestone in India’s maritime infrastructure journey and strengthens the nation’s position on global shipping routes.
Scaling Capacity and Boosting Global Connectivity
Building on the strong early momentum since its initial operations, the expansion will significantly scale the port’s capacity and operational capabilities. It is designed to enhance India’s presence in international maritime trade, reducing dependence on foreign transshipment hubs like Colombo, Singapore, and Dubai.
The project is set to accelerate Kerala’s emergence as a major logistics and transshipment hub in the Indian Ocean region, attracting higher volumes of container traffic and boosting economic activity in the state and beyond.
A Step Toward a Globally Connected India
This strategic investment underlines India's transition toward a stronger, more self-reliant, and globally connected maritime future. It aligns with national initiatives such as the Sagarmala Programme and the vision to develop world-class port infrastructure.
Once fully expanded, Vizhinjam is expected to handle a substantial share of India’s container transshipment traffic, cutting logistics costs, improving supply chain efficiency, and supporting the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ missions.
