BEML Limited (formerly Bharat Earth Movers Limited) was established in May 1964 as a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) for manufacturing rail coaches, spare parts, and mining equipment at its Bangalore Complex. Over the years, the company has undergone partial disinvestment, and currently, the Government of India holds a 54% stake, while the remaining 46% is owned by the public, financial institutions, foreign institutional investors, banks, and employees.
BEML is a Miniratna Category-I company that plays a vital role in India’s core sectors, including Defence, Rail, Power, Mining, and Infrastructure. The company started with a modest turnover of ₹5 crore in 1965, and today, with its diversified business portfolio, it has achieved a turnover exceeding ₹3,500 crore.
Business Verticals and Operations
BEML operates under three major business verticals:
- Mining & Construction – Manufacturing bulldozers, excavators, dumpers, shovels, loaders, and motor graders for various industries.
- Defence – Producing defence ground support equipment, including Tatra-based high-mobility trucks, recovery vehicles, bridge systems, mine ploughs, aircraft towing tractors, missile project vehicles, tank transportation trailers, and more. The company is also planning to undertake overhaul and upgradation of battle tanks.
- Rail & Metro – Manufacturing and supplying rail coaches, metro cars, AC EMUs, OHE cars, and steel & aluminium wagons for the railway sector.
Each business vertical is headed by a Director (acting as CEO of the business), reporting to the Chairman & Managing Director. In addition, BEML has a Trading Division that deals in non-company products.
Manufacturing & Global Presence
BEML operates nine manufacturing units located at Bangalore, Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), Mysore, and Palakkad, along with its subsidiary Vignyan Industries Ltd. in Chikmagalur District. The company has an extensive marketing and service network across India and exports its products to over 56 countries.
As part of its global expansion strategy, BEML has established local offices in Indonesia and Brazil, in addition to its existing offices in Malaysia and China.
